VAN EYCK ACADEMIE, ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
14-16th March 2019
A point of reference for this project was the Kapla system, devised by a Dutchman in the 1980s. The system’s slender wooden planks, initially of untreated wood but later multicoloured, can be stacked up to make an endless variety of constructions. Generations of children have grown up on Kapla building sets.
In the wood workshop of the Van Eyck Academie, I presented the a large structure made of separate planks held together by elastic bands. Parts of the system tilted when pushed, thereby changing the form and revealing ever new patterns of colour on the uppermost surface.
